Canada and the USA are increasingly affected by climate change. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, changes to weather and rainfall patterns, and rising sea levels impact not only the environment (including water and soil) and biodiversity across North America, but also human life health, and the economy. The IPCC has warned that, without limiting global warming to 1.5°C, key risks are expected to increase and intensify over the coming decades.

At the same time, both Canada and the USA are determined to take action to prevent this from happening. Both countries have set ambitious targets to reach net zero by 2050. Climate adaptation and mitigation strategies will be key. Green growth is also an opportunity, encouraging innovation in sectors such as renewable energy and stimulating national and local economies.

Innovative solutions with global and local applications

As a specialised research institute, Deltares believes in working with clients and partners to co-create innovative solutions to these challenges whilst at the same time maximising opportunities. We do so with an established local network; Deltares in The Netherlands (DNL) works closely with Deltares USA, Inc. (DUSA), a fully independent US not-for- profit organisation based in Maryland.

Our solutions are individually tailored and designed for real-world application. They are based on both our local knowledge and expertise acquired from our work across the world. We work with both the public and private sectors, including federal, state, and local agencies and governments. We also work closely with universities.

Expertise

Our expertise and tailored solutions span across a wide range of areas, including operational forecasting and real-time control, coastal modelling, and urban resilience.

Operational Forecasting and Real-Time Control

We have enabled well-balanced reservoir management operations by generating integrated modelling systems that allow a range of reservoir services to be executed and prioritised, while optimally using all operational data and models available. We have also has created dozens of Delft-FEWS systems that ensure reliable river and flood forecasting platform for agencies across Canada and the USA.

Coastal modelling

Deltares specialises in the application of coastal modelling software and the development state-of-the-art capabilities with respect to numerical modelling. We have extensive experience in coastal modelling projects with specific reference to hydrodynamics, waves, overland flooding, and sediment dynamics by working with numerous consultants, universities, federal, and local organisations.

Urban resilience

Cities face increasing challenges including the effects of climate change, growing populations, inadequate infrastructure, cyber-attacks, and ongoing pandemic. Resilience allows them to adapt and transform in the face of these challenges, helping them to prepare for both the expected and the unexpected.

Services

In addition to our solutions, we also provide software and training services. Our software consists of open-source simulation products, such as the Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite (Delft3D FM) for modelling coastal waters, estuaries, rivers, lakes, rural, and urban areas. Over 180 universities across Canada and the USA use the Delft3D software, and over 24,000 software users and developers worldwide have joined our open source community. Service packages are also available.

We also offer training courses, designed to maximise the use of our software. These focus on different areas such as modelling and coastal hydrodynamics.

Dare to share

Deltares believes in openness and transparency, and that sharing knowledge and innovative insights worldwide enables delta life. Our dare to share principle applies to all our clients and includes the software and tools we develop, as well as our specialised and tailor-made consultancy solutions. We are firmly convinced of the need for our work to be open source.
