About Doris Vertegaal
Doris Vertegaal is a PhD Researcher working on the topic of Climate and Impact Attribution of Compound Extremes. She is supervised by Prof. Dr. Bart van den Hurk, Dr. Sanne Muis and Dr. Anaïs Couasnon. In her research, she seeks to apply globally relevant attribution methods and data to a local case study in the coastal region of Mozambique. Her work focuses on attributing both physical and socioeconomic drivers of compound flooding caused by tropical cyclones. This interdisciplinary approach aims to enhance the understanding of climate impacts, with the goal of improving risk assessments for compound events and ensuring the safety and habitability of coastal regions.
Previously she worked for the think and do tank Clim-Eat which aims to bridge science and policy for climate and food in Utrecht since January 2022. Prior to joining Clim-Eat, Doris worked for the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) where she organised several events to raise awareness about youth engagement in climate adaptation for food systems. For her activities at CCAFS, Doris has been awarded as one of the three Young Environment Ambassadors of the BESTSELLER Foundation in January 2022.
She holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences and a Master's degree in Climate Studies from Wageningen University & Research with a specialisation in Biogeochemical Cycles and the Physical Climate System. During her studies, she did a minor in Atmosphere-Ocean interactions at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and an internship in oceanic carbon observations at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany.
Outside Deltares you can find her at the Institute for Environmental Sciences (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
