About Gerald Jan Ellen

Gerald Jan contributes to the mission of Deltares by working together with both Deltares colleagues and a wide variety of societal stakeholders by understanding and enhancing the societal impact of the work of Deltares to address societal challenges. He does so by applying governance knowledge and interactive approaches always keeping policy and societal reality in sight. The societal challenges that he works on are climate adaptation and (urban and rural) soil health, but he is also active in other domains such as the energy transition and flood risk management.

Gerald Jan is active in both local, regional, national and European research projects. Recent projects are KLIMAP and European Soil Mission projects (finished and ongoing) are important (SMS, SOILL and SPADES). One specific field of expertise have his specific interest. First of all the application of citizens science or participatory monitoring in the field of soil health and water management. Secondly the societal impact of science and research. To this end Gerald Jan is part of a team (consisting of Deltares, TUDelft, Wageningen University and UTwente) working on a productive interactions research infrastructure as part of the Delta Enigma project
