About Jaap Schellekens
Jaap Schellekens is a Senior Expert in Hydrology at Deltares with over 30 years of experience in hydrology, water resource management, and environmental modeling. Holding a Ph.D. in Tropical Forest Hydrology and Hydrological Modelling from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, he has developed extensive expertise in hydrological modeling, particularly in flood forecasting and assessing impacts of land-use and climate change. Jaap has a proven track record in leading large-scale international projects, including the €11.8 million eartH2Observe European 7th framework project, and has worked across multiple countries including Thailand, Bolivia, Singapore, UK, Australia, and the US. His strong background in integrating remote sensing data with hydrology, coupled with experience in product management and development of innovative water-related products at VanderSat B.V and Planet Labs PBC, demonstrates his ability to bridge cutting-edge technology with practical applications.
Jaap Schellekens brings extensive expertise in hydrology, particularly in understanding the hydrological impacts of land-use and climate change, hydrological modeling with a focus on flood forecasting, and integrating remote sensing with hydrology. He has led numerous significant projects related to probabilistic flood forecasting, global hydrology, effects of climate change and has provided advisory services to leading meteorological agencies on implementing the Delft-FEWS flood forecasting system
