About Jelmer Veenstra
Jelmer Veenstra is an advisor/researcher at the Marine and Coastal Systems unit at Deltares in the field of 2D and 3D hydrodynamic modelling of coastal systems. He holds an MSc in Water Management and Engineering, focusing on hydrodynamics, coastal safety, hydraulic engineering and sediment transport. He is experienced with complex tidal, wind and density-driven flows in Dutch and international coastal waters. Jelmer is one of the key contributors to the development of Deltares' Global Tide and Surge Model (GTSM). He is experienced with several modelling suites and programming languages. He contributes to developing several open-source Python packages, for tidal analysis and prediction (hatyan) and pre-/post-processing of model output (dfm_tools, HYDROLIB-core, xugrid and more).
Jelmer drives innovation by optimizing workflows, ensuring they are modular, seamless, generic, reproducible, and efficient. Working on the interface of modelling and programming, he actively contributes to software developments. He also contributes to the dissemination of knowledge by providing software and programming trainings. Jelmer also contributes to the broader academic or professional community by sharing novel knowledge, discoveries, and insights through peer-reviewed publications.
