About Marc Hijma

Dr. Marc Hijma is a geologist with expertise in all aspects related to the subsurface and living in a delta. He has been working on this subject for over 20 years, accumulating a wealth of experience. His motto is “the answer lies in the field,” and his work is characterized by the use of field measurements combined with knowledge of the system being studied. His work has a strong scientific basis, but he is very keen on implementing new knowledge in practice. Having an impact with research is one of his major driving forces. Therefore, he collaborates not only with universities in the Netherlands and abroad but also with organizations such as Rijkswaterstaat and water authorities. Since early 2024, he is also working as a guest researcher at Wageningen University and Research.

He is active in many fields, but mainly focuses on:

  • Sea-level changes: past, present, and future
  • Land subsidence along the Dutch coast
  • Failure mechanism piping for levees
  • Spatial planning in relation to geology and cultural history
  • Geological advice for infrastructural works
  • North Sea geology and archaeology

Dr. Hijma values the dissemination of knowledge and gives numerous courses, particularly at the intersection of geology and geotechnics. His work regularly appears in newspapers and scientific journals. Click here for an overview of his scientific output.
