About Nienke Vermeer

Nienke has been working at Deltares since 2022. Before joining Deltares, she obtained a bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences and a master's degree in Earth Surface & Water from Utrecht University.

As a consultant/researcher in the Applied Morphodynamics department, Nienke focuses on understanding coastal systems. Her work mainly focuses on national projects related to coastal and estuarine morphodynamics, research in support of the national coastal nourishment policy, coastal erosion and sediment budgets. She is also involved in several monitoring projects of intertidal areas in the Eastern Scheldt and Western Scheldt, as well as the monitoring of the Sand Motor.

To study coastal systems, Nienke uses data collected during detailed field experiments. Her expertise in data analysis techniques and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allows her to process and visualise complex datasets. She combines the results of her data analysis with modelling results to provide a holistic view of the project area. She also incorporates stakeholder input, thus integrating local knowledge and concerns into her research. This ensures a more integrated and applicable approach to coastal management.

Besides her work at Deltares, Nienke is also programme secretary at the Netherlands Centre for Coastal Research (NCK), where she is responsible for day-to-day management. Her work promotes knowledge exchange within the scientific community engaged in coastal research.
