About Tess Davids
As a hydrogeologist specializing in fresh and saltwater interaction, Tess plays a key role in Deltares' mission of "Enabling Delta Life." Her work focuses on groundwater modeling for deltas and small islands (SIDS), helping ensure these vulnerable regions remain habitable in the face of climate change and sea level rise.
Tess contributes to this mission by:
- Developing groundwater models that provide insight into the complex interaction between fresh and saltwater.
- Focusing on delta regions and small islands, where freshwater availability is crucial for survival.
- Collaborating on international projects aimed at sustaining these regions for the future.
Her goal is clear: to keep coastal regions, particularly SIDS, resilient and livable despite growing environmental pressures. Tess's expertise in saltwater intrusion and aquifer management directly supports two of Deltares' moonshots (the ambitious goals we have set as an organisation): "Deltas Remain Habitable" and "Resilient and Healthy Water Systems for People and Nature".
Qualities and Skills
- Strong technical background in hydrogeology and groundwater modeling.
- Collaborative spirit, working with global teams to solve complex water issues.
- Passion for sustainability, aiming to leave a positive mark on the world.
- Excellent communication, translating scientific findings into practical solutions.
Social Challenges
- Climate change and sea-level rise: Ensuring that small islands and delta regions remain habitable.
- Freshwater availability: Securing resilient and healthy water systems for both people and nature.
- Sustainability: Supporting communities with long-term water management strategies.
Career Successes
One of Tess’s proudest achievements is developing an open-source, free groundwater modeling framework for SIDS. This framework has significantly simplified and accelerated groundwater modeling for small island nations, empowering local teams to address their water challenges more effectively.
What Else?
Tess is passionate about her work. She believes in collaboration and enjoys working with diverse teams to achieve common goals. Her ultimate ambition is to leave the world better than she found it.
