Groundwater is a pivotal determinant of flow, temperature and water quality in many surface waters. The contribution of groundwater to lowland streams and its effects were characterised by combining modelling and innovative measurements. Groundwater seepage is highly heterogeneous and it can both mitigate and transfer the effects of stressors.
