Scour holes threaten dike and riverbank instability and may result in structural damage. It is necessary to predict scour development in order to assess and mitigate the risks. This study improved the understanding of scour-hole development in heterogeneous subsoil lithology by combining field data analysis, numerical modelling and scale-model experiments.
