Bas van Maren visiting professor Shanghai
Bas van Maren expert in fine sediment dynamics has been appointed visiting professor at the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research, part of East China Normal University in Shanghai.

Bas Van Maren's appointment is part of a long-term cooperation project between China and the Netherlands, and he will therefore fulfill his work partly in China (as soon as travel restrictions due to Covid allow this) and partly at Technical University in Delft. He also continues to work for Deltares for 50% of his time. In this way, he can link scientific research to application-oriented studies as much as possible.
In China Van Maren will mainly focus on the influence of human actions on estuaries. Systems in the Netherlands and China have been strongly influenced by human interventions such as dredging, land reclamation and closures. Studying these diverse systems together provides valuable insight into the impact of human interventions in relation to natural dynamics on different scales.
In the Netherlands he is mainly involved in research concerning the Wadden Sea including the Ems estuary and abroad with the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, and the Yangtze Delta. In these deltas, understanding and predicting the effects of local human interventions in relation to natural dynamics and expected climate change is an important issue the coming years.
