Critical infrastructure resilience
Our team of experts specialises in conducting resilience and criticality analysis, risk assessment, and modelling of critical infrastructure to deepen understanding and facilitate informed decision-making. We understand the challenges faced by governments, infrastructure owners, and operators in ensuring the safety and reliability of infrastructure in the face of natural hazards and climate change. We analyse infrastructure at different levels, ranging from the object level to the connection, network, and system levels.
Infrastructure & extreme events
Using network analyses, we identify critical infrastructure vulnerabilities, damages, and losses. We can provide a comprehensive understanding of infrastructure susceptibility to extreme events such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and sea-level rise. Through our projects we aim to enhance resilience of critical infrastructure systems, including roads, railways, and pipelines by offering adaptation options. Our focus on inclusiveness and equity-based evaluations ensures that results also indicate which socio-economic (vulnerable) groups benefit most from interventions.
Long term adaptation planning & Emergency management
We enhance resilience via long-term adaptation and planning by performing cost-benefit analyses, multi-criteria analyses, and socio-economic evaluations to identify the best possible adaptation strategy as infrastructure. Our aim is to aid infrastructure stakeholders to make informed decisions under deep uncertainty.
Our results can also be used in emergency response and during post-disaster needs assessment services to provide a better informed and faster emergency response.
Capacity building
Our training programs on critical infrastructure resilience enhancement, adaptive building, and nature-based solutions provide infrastructure managers with the necessary tools and techniques to implement resilience-enhancing activities in their organisations.
Software and tooling
The RA2CE - Resilience Assessment and Action perspective for Critical infrastructurE – model has been developed to support infrastructure owners and operators in resilience assessment and adaptation decision-making and has been applied in several settings such as the Netherlands, Philippines, Myanmar, Dominican Republic and Albania.
The current capabilities focus on mapping the exposure, criticality, and vulnerability as well as the forthcoming prioritisation of locations to take actions based on cost benefit assessment. For further assessment of indirect impacts, inclusiveness and equity principles can be applied. In adaptation and planning studies the platform enables to perform cost-benefit assessments including an uncertain future.
