This is done with physical scale models because they give the best test results. The structures can be large and costly because they are constructed in locations where it is difficult to build. We deliver tailor-made solutions for every unique construction situation.

Testing in a close to actual situation

We make conceptual designs for contractors, engineering firms and governments and evaluate and test the constructions. The optimization of the design is paramount. Testing takes place in state-of-the-art research facilities such as the Delta Flume, where the scale is very close to the real-life situation. Here it is examined whether the construction lasts for an adequate amount of time and how the structure holds up in extreme weather conditions.

Our multidisciplinary teams work with computer models, expert opinions and high-quality tests to come up with suitable solutions. We can for example also assist with the determination of hydraulic preconditions through site visits and risk evaluations.

Growing demand drives innovation

The growing demand for sustainable and affordable coastal hydraulic structures means that innovation is becoming increasingly important. More and more people live in coastal areas and therefore more importance is attached to environmental aspects. A structure must last a significant amount of time and be constructed at the lowest possible cost. By doing research in the design phase, we contribute to the optimization of the construction. For existing buildings, we can provide an evaluation and verification test.

Innovation in knowledge, materials and measurement techniques

At Deltares, you can count on the most up-to-date knowledge to realize safe constructions at lower costs. In addition to specific projects for clients, we conduct systematic research into, for example, innovative materials such as cladding elements and open water filters, among other things. In addition, innovations in measurement techniques ensure that we gain more knowledge from our tests. As an institute, we work on maintaining our knowledge advantage and on spreading knowledge.
