Tackling the challenges and opportunities of climate forced mobility in Africa
The African continent, despite contributing least to global greenhouse gas emissions, is the most impacted by climate change. Temperatures are predicted to increase at a higher rate than the global average, and extreme weather events are becoming commonplace.

Leading the consultation on Coastal and Delta Areas of the Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (ACMI), we are now looking for stakeholders with particular knowledge of current and future climate impacts, human mobility dynamics, and adaptation actions in African coastal and delta areas to join part of our fact-finding mission.
What is the purpose of the consultation on Coastal and Delta Areas
The ACMI Consultation on Coastal and Delta Areas will bring a focus on African coastal areas to the research and modelling undertaken for the ACMI. It will review the findings from data collection on people’s decisions to move or stay in the context of climate impacts gathered through household interviews and focus group discussions by the Mixed Migration Center. The workstream will also review the results of the modelling by the Colombia University of future climate mobility scenarios from the perspective of coastal and delta areas to see where these might become hotspots of in- or outmigration and which factors are decisive in shaping different population redistribution scenarios.
Invitation
If you are working in or conducting research on resilience and adaptation in African coastal and delta areas, you are invited to join us in the review and analysis of the field research and modeling findings.
We will be holding a total of three workshops; our first session is January 18, 2022. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate all expressions of interest to participate in the process. Please let us know why you need to be involved in this review.
All is part of the Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (ACMI)
The Coastal and Delta Areas Consultation is part of The Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (ACMI)a joint initiative of the African Union Commission, the World Bank, UNDP, UNFCCC and IOM. The ACMI aims to generate political momentum, a common policy agenda, and partnerships for tackling the challenges and opportunities of climate forced mobility in Africa.
Coastal and Delta areas are at the forefront of climate and migration dynamics in Africa. The climate crisis causes both rural villages as well as major core cities to be threatened by sea level rise, and environmental shocks such as coastal floods and cyclones, augmented by high tides, and extreme storm surges and their effects on coastal erosion.
The ACMI and particularly the Consultation on Coastal and Delta Areas aims to be a platform for knowledge-sharing, driving towards collective action by following a holistic, multi-disciplinary, human-centered and evidence-based approach.
