Sytse: "I’m impressed by the solutions that we test here"
At Deltares, our people work every day to develop solutions for the major challenges of our time. One of them is Sytse Riedstra, a project technician with a background in mechanical engineering. By designing and testing models of dykes and water flows, he contributes to making the Netherlands—and the world—a safer place. What inspires him to work at Deltares? We asked Sytse: "What drives you?"
Water Safety in Action
"I work in the DeltaFlume, a unique testing facility in which we replicate dykes, breakwaters, and the foundations of structures like wind turbines, either to scale or in full size. Here, we simulate extreme conditions, such as severe storms and high waves. The results from these tests help us refine computer models and support engineers in designing safer and more efficient solutions."
In the DeltaFlume, Sytse combines practical expertise with a passion for water safety and innovation. His role is hands-on and challenging. "I help build the test setups and conduct experiments with water flows and waves. What’s remarkable is that the solutions we test here are often applied within just a few years. A great example is the renovation of the Afsluitdijk. We tested multiple sections of the dyke in the DeltaFlume, as some areas required more protection than others. The results directly influence real-world projects, and that’s incredibly motivating."
Experiments
What makes Sytse’s work so special? “I thrive in high-pressure moments. When a test day doesn’t go as planned, it challenges us to think on our feet and come up with creative solutions quickly. Together with the team, we look for ways to improve and keep the experiment moving forward. It’s intense, but that’s exactly what makes it so rewarding. That energy, combined with knowing that our work truly makes an impact, is what drives me.”
Sometimes, a test unfolds differently than expected, those are the moments when I'm standing in the DeltaFlume with a smile on my face.

Shaping the future of water safety
The work in the DeltaFlume addresses urgent global challenges such as climate change and rising sea levels. “Around the world, we’re seeing the effects of extreme weather and higher water levels. Yet, what strikes me most is the resilience of people. I believe we can overcome these challenges together, and I’m proud that at Deltares, we contribute to that effort.”
While solving today’s problems, the team also focuses on the long term. “We need to take action now to ensure that our solutions remain effective twenty, fifty, or even a hundred years from now. What I love about working here is that we develop innovations that make a difference today while also preparing for the future. That combination of short- and long-term impact is what makes our work unique.”
Motivation through visible results
For Sytse, seeing the tangible results of his work is a key motivator. “When I see that our innovations are being implemented and are contributing to safer dykes and coastlines, it gives me the drive to keep going. It proves that what we do truly matters.”
At Deltares, Sytse feels he’s in the right place. “It’s incredible to know that every day, I’m contributing to a safer and more sustainable Netherlands—and perhaps even a better world.”
