A childhood in nature

“My parents are biologists, and from an early age, they taught us to appreciate the importance of nature. My sister and I used to wander through the neighbourhood with a wheelbarrow, rescuing snails and moving them to safer places. It might sound like a small gesture, but it reflects my love for all living things. That passion runs through everything I do—even though my approach has changed significantly over the years,” says Rianne, who grew up in Wageningen, a town known for its focus on sustainability and nature.

Water is life

Rianne studied biology and chemistry and soon found her calling in environmental toxicology—the study of how toxic substances affect ecosystems. In her current role, she investigates the effects of these substances on water.

“Water is life. Ultimately, everything we do revolves around water. In my work, I examine how substances, such as chemical residues or pollutants, impact water and, by extension, the environment. My goal is to create healthier, better-quality water. I mostly work on projects in the Netherlands, but occasionally, I contribute to international efforts as well. It’s incredibly rewarding to know I’m helping preserve nature in this way.”

Her work goes beyond analyses and reports; it’s about improving and protecting larger systems. “Water quality is intrinsically linked to biodiversity, the health of our ecosystems, and even our own future. When I complete a project, I know it makes a small but meaningful difference. That’s what drives me.”

I want to contribute to a better future. Without water, we cannot survive. I feel that what I do truly matters.

The impact on everyday life

What makes her work unique is her personal connection to it—but this also has its challenges. “This isn’t just a job for me. I’m deeply invested in what I do, which sometimes makes it difficult. The knowledge I gain through my work stays with me in my everyday life, and that can be confronting.”

One example is her commitment to minimising her ecological footprint. “I avoid flying as much as possible because I know the environmental impact. Sometimes this means my friends go on holidays without me, or I persuade them to take the train instead. When we end up with delays, I feel a bit guilty. It’s not always easy, but I know my choices align with what I value.”

Rianne loves spending time in nature and often visits Landgoed Haarzuilens, a beautiful natural area near Utrecht. “Whenever I’m somewhere, I can’t help but wonder about the state of the water there. I see my work reflected everywhere I go.”

Pride in her work

What Rianne does feels like a privilege. “I’m still amazed that I get paid to do something I find so important and enjoyable. Every day, I work knowing that - even if only in a small way - I’m contributing to a better world. That makes me happy and gives me energy.”

Her conviction is evident in her dedication to nature. “Being here, in this beautiful world, is a privilege. That understanding shapes how I approach my work and my life.”
