Deltares team secures second place in forecasting challenge Atlantic Ocean with new development in particle tracking
Deltares USA has teamed with Deltares Netherlands to enter the DARPA Forecasting Floats in Turbulence (FFT) challenge. This open competition entails participants to provide a 10-day trajectory forecast, 22nd Nov to 3rd Dec 2021, for the 90 spotters released by DARPA in the Atlantic Ocean. -
Accurate surface water mapping with optical and SAR data
Fifteen organisations across the world, including Deltares, participated in the WorldWater Round Robin inter-comparison study of satellite-derived water detection methods. The first results are promising. “Our belief that it’s very beneficial to combine Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical imagery has been reaffirmed,” says researcher Arjen Haag from Deltares. -
Faster, higher-resolution modelling of fresh groundwater resources
To make predictions more accurate, high-resolution groundwater models are needed that can simulate reality better. Worldwide, billions of people depend on fresh groundwater resources for their domestic, agricultural and industrial water consumption. Testing monitoring techniques for underground high temperature storage
A spatial image showing heat distribution is needed to establish a clearer picture of the efficiency of underground high temperature storage (60-90°C).-
Europe invests in research to remove substances of concern from the environment
Zero pollution! The European Commission wants a circular economy where pollutants are kept out of the environment. Twelve million euros are currently being invested in research that contributes to the European Green Deal ambition. Expansion of offshore solar farm in North Sea
Offshore Scheveningen (NL), there is a trial system of interconnected solar panels that have managed to cope with waves and wind for two years. The initiators, Oceans of Energy, are going to expand the offshore solar system to a yield of 1MW.-
Coastal vegetated ecosystems essential for keeping coastal protection affordable in low income countries
Using satellite data and numerical modelling, researchers from Deltares together with TU Delft, IVM and University of Cádiz globally assessed current coastal vegetation width and wave reduction. Resulting levee crest heights were assessed and monetized indicating that globally vegetation presence can yield a potential reduction in costs for construction of coastal infrastructure of 320 billion USD. The results of the global study were published this week in the journal Nature Communications. The aridification of Eastern Africa
Where else to look for changes in the earth’s climate than the ocean? The seabed contains much information on how the world’s climate has changed over the millennia. It recently revealed how the climate of Eastern African changed from wetter conditions to the arid conditions we know today. An article in Nature entitled ‘Indo-Pacific Walker circulation drove Pleistocene African aridification’, co-written by Deltares’ Björn Backeberg, explains how the authors looked to the seabed to discover that a shift in air circulation about two million years ago is likely to have brought about this change.-
Are we adapting to climate change? New study provides better understanding of human adaptation activities worldwide
There is a growing evidence that people and organizations are responding to climate change with a wide range of actions. However, evidence in the academic literature on the effectiveness of these actions to reduce climate risks is limited. This is one of the main findings of a study which was published on 28 October by an international group of 126 scientists - amongst which also a scientist from Deltares - from across the globe. Kick off REACHOUT project this week: making European cities climate resilient
While the world community is trying to reach an agreement in Glasgow to achieve a faster and further reduction of greenhouse gases in order to prevent dangerous climate warming, climate adaptation experts and representatives of 7 European cities are settling down in Rotterdam (3-4 November) for the kickoff of the European REACHOUT research project.Exchanging knowledge with the world – AIWW 2021
With two keynote speeches on Clean water and ecosystem restoration’ and ‘Risk and Resilience’ and expert representation on the Round Table on Pollution-free rivers we are delighted to be able to exchange knowledge in person again during the Amsterdam International Water Week (AIWW).Deltares contribution to UN Climate Change Conference (COP26)
The COP26 summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Annemieke Nijhof (Managing Director Deltares): “The Netherlands has an excellent starting position: we carefully measure and monitor developments and work on long-term strategic foresights in the Delta Programme. Adapting to climate change however requires action now: major adjustments to our use of space and land or our infrastructure always take a long time. We must examine to what extent we can work ahead. We cannot leave the bill for energy transition and adaptation measures to our children.”
