Two methods to calculate the response of saturated porous media to hydrodynamic loads are compared: the method by Biot (1941) and a new method presented by Van Damme and Den Ouden-Van der Horst (2023). This report describes a limited investigation of the practical implications of this new approach.
It is concluded that for compressible water, for the pore pressures the same solution is obtained by both models, yet the deformations may be different, up to a factor of (at least) three, with sometimes an overall different spatial distribution.
Fundamental research is therefore recommended.
